Each academic year, the Edmond & Lily Safra Center for Ethics awards up to 2 unpaid Visiting Fellowships to researchers and practitioners who propose to visit Harvard in order to work on pressing issues in ethics. Generally, these fellowships are for individuals who are not in need of funding and who have paid sabbatical or other leave support, and are typically awarded for a period of 3-12 months (in rare cases, we may consider applications outside of that timeframe). Scholars who are in need of funding should consider applying for our Fellows-in-Residence program.
Visiting Fellows are expected to devote the majority of their time to their individual projects. Visiting Fellows will be invited - but not required - to participate in regular work-in-progress seminars and in the Center's programming, which includes public lectures, themed seminars and reading groups, conferences, workshops, and lunch discussions. Access to Harvard's libraries, programming, and community of scholars can often be facilitated by the Center, depending on length of stay. The Center will provide office space only in the rare cases in which it is available.
For 2024-25, the Center is most interested in applicants working in the area of Civil Discourse, and whose presence would enrich the Fellows-in-Residence cohort experience and/or contribute to related programming.
Eligibility
Faculty in arts and sciences and at professional schools, postdoctoral scholars, and practitioners from industry, government, and NGOs are eligible to apply. Practitioners must have a minimum of five years of professional experience by the start of the Fellowship. Any discipline or professional field will be considered eligible. Visiting Fellowships are open to all applicants who meet the above criteria, regardless of citizenship.
Funding
Visiting Fellows must be able to provide evidence of external funding.
Application Requirements
The deadlines for these applications are March 15 (for visits during the Fall term or the full academic year) and October 15 (for visits during the spring term). You may submit your application at any time, but we review applications twice a year, in April and November.
To apply, you will need to complete an online application form which includes submission of the following in .pdf or .doc form:
- Brief cover letter stating your background and your interest in visiting the Edmond & Lily Safra Center for Ethics
- 2-3 page description of your proposed research
- CV
- Recent writing sample
- Names and contact information of three professional references
Please note that the application form will be saved automatically while in progress, but no edits or alterations will be allowed once you have submitted it. Should you have any questions regarding this application process, you may email us at ethics_fellowships@fas.harvard.edu.
